Playboy magazine celebrated its 50th anniversary with the January 1004 issue. Playboy got its humble beginnings in the kitchen of Hugh Hefner’s Hype Park apartment in December 1953. He produced that first issue and published it with no date, as he was unsure there would be a second issue. Marilyn Monroe was the first centerfold, featured in that premier issue. The photograph was not taken for Playboy, it was originally taken for a calendar. The first issue sold for 50 cents, in 2002 you could sell a near mint or mint condition copy of that issue for around $5,000. The infamous rabbit logo, a stylized profile or a rabbit wearing a tuxedo bow tie, originally designed by Art Paul, appeared in the second issue of Playboy. It was to be an endnote, however was adopted as the official logo and has appeared in every issue since. Hefner has been quoted that he choose the rabbit for its “humorous sexual connotation”, and because the image is “frisky and playful”.
